Whilst walking down the 9th fairway of Royal Portrush, host of the 1951 British Open - the only one ever held in Ireland - I noticed two Irish women searching for lost golf balls. When I left the green, I called back: "Can either one of you teach me how to putt?" "Darlin'," she replied, "I'm a wonderful putter, but there's a problem. First I'd turn your head, then I'd turn your heart, and then you"d want to give up the game altogether." My chance meeting with these two lovely ladies is something I have shared with many golfers, and it reminded me of the sage advice a fellow high school golf coach told me years ago: "Play Ireland at least once in your life."
